City Code of Ordinances

As of now, Short-term rental, expressly as separate land use, is not defined in Charlotte Zoning Ordinance. You should consult Charlotte Zoning Ordinance to see if your listing is consistent with zoning requirements or use definitions.

Business License Requirements

All people conducting business within the city limits of Charlotte must get a business license. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department keeps a free registration for both short and long-term rentals inside Charlotte municipal limits. Registration is mandatory for owners of properties that meet certain “disorder risk” thresholds and voluntary for all others.

Building and Housing Standards

Charlotte has rules and regulations that specify minimum building, design, maintenance standards, habitability, health, and safety requirements. Some rules and regulations that apply to residential and non-residential properties may apply to your listing. For more information, see Chapters 5 and 12 of the Charlotte Code of Ordinances and the Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement website.

Tourist and Local Taxes

The County of Mecklenburg assesses room occupancy taxes on rents charged for accommodations of less than 90 days in hotels, motels, corporate housing, and comparable venues such as private houses. Furthermore, North Carolina levies sales tax on gross receipts from such rentals.

Other Rules

It is also essential to understand and abide by other contracts or rules that bind you, such as leases, condo boards, co-op rules, HOA rules, or rules established by tenant organizations. Please read your lease agreement and check with your landlord if applicable. Visit the City of Charlotte for more information.
