City Code of Ordinances

The City of Murfreesboro Zoning Ordinance does not specifically regulate short-term rentals.  As long as the property is being used consistent with what the zoning regulations allow (e.g., a single-family residence being used as a single-family residence), the City's zoning regulations do not speak to the duration of occupancy or the length of a lease term.  Likewise, no zoning permit is required.

Business License Requirements

The City of Murfreesboro has no regulations about registering short-term rentals, and no zoning permit is required. If applicable, apply for all State and County licenses.

Building and Housing Standards

The City of Murfreesboro has rules and regulations that specify minimum building, design, maintenance standards, habitability, health, and safety requirements. Some rules and regulations that apply to residential and non-residential properties may apply to your listing. Consult the City of Murfreesboro Building & Codes for more information.

Tourist and Local Taxes

Owners must pay hotel-motel tax on rentals of less than 30 days. Short-term rentals might also be subjected to the state and county sales tax and are liable for payment as established by state and county law. Contact the Finance & Tax Department for more information.

Other Rules

It is also essential to understand and abide by other contracts or rules that bind you, such as leases, condo boards, co-op rules, HOA rules, or rules established by tenant organizations. Please read your lease agreement and check with your landlord if applicable. Visit the City of Murfreesboro for more information.
